Should I Wear a Speedo?

Most would say the answer to wearing Speedo or not is up to the individual. That’s true, but what if you’re still undecided? If you’re not familiar with the debate, here are the main points from both sides.

Against Speedo

One reason to avoid it is when you have some extra fat in the belly or thigh area. Unlike other swimwear, Speedo can make this body feature more conspicuous than it already is. In other words, it can make you look unattractive.

Another reason is that it tends to show more than other swimwear. Some people have no problem with that. But there are others who just don’t feel comfortable with it. Some people also feel uneasy seeing someone wearing Speedo. Some people might feel embarrassed by wearing it. Even if you don’t feel embarrassed, those around you may be.

Some people also don’t find it comfortable. It’s tight fitting and can make you feel tight quickly. Over all the other arguments the one over comfort is often the most reported.

In Favor of Speedos

While some Americans feel uncomfortable with a Speedo, in other countries it’s commonplace. In Brazil, the Mediterranean and many European countries, it’s the standard. You’ll hardly see locals there wearing shorts at the beach. If you’re in one of those countries, then you should not feel embarrassed about wearing Speedo.

Besides custom and culture, there are other reasons why other people like to wear it. For one thing it offers greater flexibility. Unlike trunks, the Speedo’s design makes it easy to swim greater speeds. Moving around the water is also easier. Another advantage is it promotes a better tan line.

In practical terms, it also dries more quickly. This is because they are made from nylon. Other swimwear are comprised of numerous fabrics that take a while to dry up.

A Matter of Choice

If you still can’t make up your mind, think of your physical comfort level first. If you feel physically uncomfortable wearing Speedo, don’t. It doesn’t matter where you are; your comfort level comes above everything else.

If physical discomfort isn’t a factor, think of your location. If you don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb, then wear what the others donning. There’s no need to feel self-conscious about it. The truth is people will start noticing you if you don something different. If most are into Speedos, do the same. If not, wear something else.

Just try not to sport very long shorts. Doing so makes your legs seem short. Those large shorts also make swimming and moving in the water harder. For a more stylish look, choose a subdued color. If there are prints, keep it minimal. Also try to pick a balance between what works and what makes you look physically attractive.

The matter of wearing Speedo boils down to what you want. In the end, what matters is what you think and want. Just go with what makes you feel comfortable. It’s your body after all, so go with what feels right.
